All Things Video from CES

5 Links + 3 Tools + 1 Tactic

Don't want to read? Watch a video or listen to the audio.

Let's dive-in to all the camera and video related stuff that was announced at CES.

A bit more than 5 links today - I'm grouping CES updates by category, as there wasn't any one big thing to come out of CES. But if you want a highlight in 90 seconds, watch this TikTok featuring 34 tech devices.

Joey

📹 Cameras at CES. This device from SeeMo plugs into the HDMI on your camera and turns your iPhone or iPad into a video monitor and recorder. Camera wise, there really wasn't anything more interesting announced than the Panasonic S5-II we covered last week. PTZOptics has a new studio camera you can remotely control. 4K webcam from Razer, the Razer Kiyo Pro Ultra. And an 8K cinema camera from Bosma (yeah, haven't heard of them either).

👓 Metaverse and AR/VR. Microsoft is bullish on the metaverse. A VR headset that's more like a computer monitor. And augmented reality glasses that look like regular glasses.

📟 CES Roundup. I like to keep Video Signals focused on video and media related updates, but there were a lot of overall interesting things showing up at CES that are worth mentioning and pointing to. Lenovo had a foldable laptop/tablet concept device with a massive screen. Wireless TV (no power cable, no HDMI cable). This roundup showcases a telescope that can reduce light pollution with AI, an eyebrow printer, and Hasbro will be able to print your face on a custom toy. And roundups from Mashable and The Verge.

🦩 Mastadon, the Twitter-like alternate social network that people flocked to (pun intended) has seen a 30% drop in active users since it's peak. Not surprised. Twitter had a crazy period. It's still crazy, though less so. Lots of people checked out alternatives, reserved their username (myself included) and that was probably the last time they visited when it became clear that Twitter didn't disappear...yet. Habits are hard to change.

📺 Speaking of habits, in one of last week's issues I mentioned how TikTok added the ability to play widescreen videos full screen (where you'd rotate your device) to compete with YouTube. Well, they've added another small feature to make long videos easier to navigate - thumbnail previews while scrubbing.

I talk a lot about cameras in this newsletter. But the reality is you probably already have a kick-ass camera in your pocket - your iPhone.

80% of the stuff you want to film, an iPhone will probably work just fine. I've been using my iPhone more and more for filming, especially with the release of the new Continuity Camera feature. It's always on me, it's fast to use, and the footage is great for the web.

So if you're ready to unlock all the video features of your iPhone, check out our iPhone Video Production Masterclass.
